"Lullabies from Jerusalem" expresses our dream of a harmonious Millennium transcending linguistic barriers thru a shared love of music. Lullabies are a universal expression of love. They are soothing, reassuring and relaxing. No image is more powerful, more symbolic of parental love than the hushed melodious singing of lullabies.
Lullabies unite, they are soothing, reassuring and relaxing. They connect us with inner peace, harmony and spiritual tranquility. All lullabies aim to put baby to sleep, and so, the tunes are soft and calming, and the words usually are reassuring - don't cry, mother is here, she loves you and will protect you, close your eyes - go to sleep.
London born, Hanna Yaffe lives in Jerusalem with her two children. Her musical anthology cuts across ethnic, religious and cultural divides. The disk brings together the rainbow of sounds, which make up the cultural mosaic of Jerusalem and includes both traditional and modern lullabies in Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, English, Hebrew, Ladino, Russian, and Yiddish.
Sitting with Hanna in the photo to your left is Alya Abu Gamah, aged 70, she lives in Dir AlAsad. Dir AlAsad is an Arab village in the Upper Galilee. It is predominantly Moslem, and is well known because an amazing number of musicians, singers, writers, and artists hail from the village.
Alya used to sing at weddings, and other social events. She composed many songs, including these lullabies (click on the picture to hear the lullabies) which she sang to her own children. Alya has three daughters, and five sons. A video of Alya, will soon be available on the internet. The video and recording was funded by the Abraham Fund in New York.
